  • Overview

    Designs and analyzes mechanical systems, as well as electro-mechanical equipment and packaging. Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. Works with support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication. Provides design information to drafting for packaging documentation.

    Responsibilities

    Supports the technical lead of multiple projects which may include new product and technology development, product improvements, cost reductions, and application specific customization.  Interfaces closely with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure the smooth transition of new products from development to production.  Monitors and evaluates engineering methods and tools to ensure the sound application of scientific and engineering principles. 

     

     Responsibilities

    • Conceptualizes, designs, modifies and evaluates highly complex mechanical and electro-mechanical apparatus, components and processes. Applies original and creative approaches to design tasks.
    • Plans, conducts and supervises engineering research, development or manufacturing engineering assignments, generally involving the larger and more important projects, or more than one project of major magnitude and scope.
    • Develops and tests prototype designs as proof of concept.
    • Estimates and tracks product cost during development phase.
    • Schedules work to meet completion dates and technical specifications. Demonstrated ability to meet criteria for performance, reliability and cost
    • Coordinates and supervises engineers and technicians assigned to projects.
    • Recommends major changes in procedure or objectives. Typically operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
    • May prepare and conduct formal design reviews with internal and external customers.
    • 5% Domestic/International Travel Required

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of related experience
    • Experience with fabrication of machined, molded, cast and sheet metal components, materials selection, and packaging.
    • Possesses a competent understanding of electrical power-interface components and their general use in industrial systems (e.g. circuit breakers, contactors, motors, fans, transformers, etc.).
    • Competent with the electrical specification of a variety of cables, wiring and connectors, based on their application and particular operating environments.
    • Experienced with the PCB-layout concept, and the definition of mechanical-constraints required to guide system-integration compatibility.
    • Experienced with equipment ventilation and cooling concepts.
    • Experience with fastening methods and designing to critical safety factors
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, internal and external customers and suppliers, and outside agencies

     

    GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Individuals may be required to sit/stand in one place for long periods of time. They might be required to lift and move related equipment up to 50 pounds from time to time. This may include bending or kneeling briefly. Required to use PC/laptop/mouse for significant time virtually every day. Works in an office and lab environment with visits to the manufacturing floor to observe issues that may arise. Work in labs and manufacturing requires appropriate safety and ESD protections.  Work in an x-ray environment requires x-ray safety training as well as a dosimeter badge.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Primarily office, with regular lab work involving electro-mechanical rotating equipment.  Occasional work with aviation security threats

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Office, laboratory, manufacturing and customer sites.
